Confident & Nurturing Families
The Confident and Nurturing families' service is a partnership between Barnardo's and Newport Women's Aid. As part of the Welsh Government's Anti-Poverty Agenda the Confident and Nurturing Skills project has a 'Family Centred' approach to supporting families make positive steps in their lives.
The services' aims are:
- To recognise and build on parenting strengths and increase resilience, confidence and nurturing within families.
- To help resolve family conflicts and encourage healthy relationships and support networks.
- To support, empower and signpost families to access services and resources within their communities.
The service provides:
- 1-2-1 tailored support for the whole family
- Specific group programmes around parenting and healthy relationships
- Signposting and support for families to access local services and community resources such as housing advice, play groups or learning providers.
The service provides a variety of interventions that focus on building on positive parenting and empowering families to maintain healthy family relationships.

Play Club
Play Clubs run during term times for children aged 5-12 years. The sessions run for a maximum of two hours in various locations across Newport.
All our Play Clubs encourage child led play, where the children are free to choose what activities they take part in. Activities include sports, arts and crafts, den building, messy play and risky play. All our provisions are child centred and so the children are the decision makers when it comes to play.
Our Play Clubs are open access, children may arrive and leave at any time during the published hours although parents are asked to instruct their child not to leave the site without telling a play worker.
Newport City Council does not accept any responsibility for the care, control and supervision of children travelling to the Play Club or after they have left the site.
If your child has specific requirements and will need additional support to access any of the above services please get in touch. Parents/carers must complete a registration form before their child attends.
What you can expect
Weekly allocation meetings are held and, once the referral is allocated, a family support worker will contact you to arrange a convenient appointment to discuss your needs, looking at the strengths and resources that you and your family already have.
Together we will draw up a support plan for your family working flexibly and providing a service that fits in with your needs and commitments.
