Responsible Retailer Scheme

The council is responsible for the enforcement of a wide range of consumer protection legislation including the sale of age-restricted products such as tobacco, alcohol, knives and fireworks.

The Responsible Retailer Scheme helps local independent retailers to trade fairly and responsibly.

Trading Standards Officers will help to protect retailers from consumer protection legislation issues they may face by providing support and advice.

Become a responsible retailer

As a responsible retailer member businesses will be committing to doing everything they can to prevent selling age-restricted products.

For an annual fee of £150 (discounted to £75 in the first year) members of the scheme will receive:

  • A comprehensive due diligence package
  • On-site training for staff
  • An on-site audit report
  • Test purchases - conducted by Trading Standards on behalf of the member business.
  • Confidence from the customer that they are buying from a retailer who has acted responsibly with the safety of the public in mind.
