Women's history mosaic project

Newport City Council successfully applied for funding from the Heritage Fund to honour 100 years of women's history and to raise awareness of the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act.

The Act enabled all men and some women over the age of 30 to vote, and paved the way for universal suffrage in 1928, when all women over the age of 21 were able to vote on equal terms with men.

The six mosaics created in St Paul's Walk serve as a visual reminder of women's history and empowerment, and provide a place of interest for local people and visitors.

The mosaics were designed and created by a local artist working with local primary schools and community groups.

Digital signage allows visitors to discover more about the heritage, enabling it to be explored and better understood.
