Sustainability appraisal

A Sustainability Appraisal (SA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) need to be undertaken as part of the Local Development Plan (LDP) process.

Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is aimed at ensuring social, environmental and economic concerns are addressed and integrated into the production of a Local Development Plan.

A number of stages have been undertaken including the scoping stage and initial sustainability report.

January 2015

The Final Sustainability Appraisal Report (pdf) was endorsed by Full Council on 27 January 2015 along with the Sustainability Appraisal Appendices Volume 1 (pdf) and Sustainability Appraisal Appendices Volume 2 (pdf).

June 2014

The Sustainability Appraisal Note (pdf) (SAN) was made available for consultation alongside the Matters Arising Changes Schedule.

June-July 2013

The Sustainability Appraisal Report (pdf) (SAR) with Appendices Volume 1 (pdf) and Appendices Volume 2 (pdf) were made available for consultation, alongside the Revised Deposit Local Development Plan during June to July 2013.

2012

The Sustainability Appraisal Report (SAR) (pdf) and Appendices (pdf) accompany the LDP Deposit Plan on consultation.

This SAR follows the consultation on the Initial Sustainability Appraisal Report in January 2010 and the Scoping Report in October 2008.

Following consultation, revisions were made to the initial stages of the Sustainability Appraisal and have informed the development of this report and subsequent detailed assessments and recommendations.

The Initial Sustainability Report (ISAR)

An Initial Sustainability Appraisal Report (ISAR) accompanies the LDP Preferred Strategy and is the next step after the following tasks:

  • assessment of a series of spatial strategic options
  • assessment of strategic sites for the development of employment and housing
  • completion of an assessment to establish the compatibility of the preferred strategy with the SA objectives

The Initial Sustainability Appraisal Report (ISAR) (pdf) and Appendices A-C (pdf) and Appendix D (pdf) were made available for comment from 22 January - 19 March 2010.

The Scoping Report

The Scoping Report sets the context, develops objectives and establishes the baseline environmental, social and economic data to create a Sustainability Framework.

The framework is then used as a tool in which sustainability effects can be described, analysed and compared.

The council, working with consultants Atkins, produced a Draft Scoping Report for the Sustainability Appraisal of the Local Development Plan.

The report was subject to a six week consultation period that ended at 5pm on 22 October 2008.
