The Community Arts Development team aims to provide creative opportunities for people of all ages within the many communities of Newport.

Newport Arts Development Team co-ordinate different arts projects, events, activities and workshops throughout Newport. These may include drama, dance, arts and crafts, music, animation, film making, photography etc.


Ongoing partnerships include - the voluntary sector, community organisations and other Newport City Council departments such as Youth Services, Social Services, YOT, and Community Development.

Current projects include; Maindee Festival, Pill Carnival, Caerleon Arts Festival, Welsh Open BBoy Champs, Fashion Wales Live and Grassroots Theatre.

Newport Community Arts Development Team aims to achieve:

  • Creative opportunities for people within the communities of Newport prioritising those who are often marginalised.
  • a support network to help initiate and encourage innovative arts activities in their various forms.
  • Recognition towards the importance of the arts, within any thriving community.
  • Support for community art organisations and helping them to achieve their goals.

U.R.B.A.N (Using Retail Building for Arts in Newport)

U.R.B.A.N is a Newport based arts programme that will use vacant retail shops and turn them into creative spaces and workshops for all to see and do.

First Films

Calling All Young Film-Makers - Newport Needs You!

Have you made a film within the last 16 months? Do you live in newport or the surrounding area? Are you 21 or under? Then we want your films…

We would like to screen your film at our annual awards and screening held at The Riverfront in October.

First Films awards and screenings were created in 2007 to recognise the creativity and hard work of young filmmakers in Newport and the surrounding areas. Founded by Newport Arts Development to encourage young people into filmmaking, the event showcases films made by young people with a weeklong celebration of film, workshops and live events.

  • Film entry Criteria – First Film
  • Films made by young people aged 21 or under will only be accepted
  • Films are welcome from FURTHER EDUCATION students
  • FILMS will not be accepted from students in HIGHER EDUCATION (UNIVERSITY)
  • Only films made after January 2009 can be accepted for the 2010 Awards
  • Films already screened at previous First Film Awards are not eligible for entry
  • Filmmakers must be living in South Wales – preference will be given to those films that originated from Newport.
  • Films can only be entered that are a maximum of 10 minutes duration
