Gypsy and traveller accommodation assessment
Part 3 of the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 requires local authorities to carry out a Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment.
Newport City Council carried out an assessment in 2015 which was approved by the Welsh Government.
The assessment found an unmet need for 25 residential gypsy and traveller pitches for families who wish to live permanently in Newport and for seven transit pitches for families who are passing through the city.
The assessment is part of the planning of future accommodation provision for gypsies and travellers in Newport.
As an unmet need has been identified, the council has a legal duty to use its powers under the Mobile Homes (Wales) Act 2013 to take steps to meet that need.
This will include the provision of a socially rented gypsy and traveller site at the former road safety site in Hartridge Farm Road.

The council will work with neighbouring authorities to see how best to provide transit pitches to meet the needs of gypsies and travellers who travel through the area.
