Statement from Leader re proposal for designated prostitution zone

Posted on Monday 27th July 2015

We are angry and disappointed that we have not received any official communication from senior officers at Gwent Police about proposals for a designated prostitution zone. It is a major issue that has upset residents and businesses of Newport.

This issue has not been discussed at a Labour Group meeting as has been reported and as Leader of the council I have not been consulted in any way about this nor has any other senior officer at the council.

If the police had consulted with us, we would have expressed concern as the proposals go against the council’s plans for the regeneration of the Pill area which has seen buildings transformed, improvements made to public areas and spectacular art work installed.

We understand that the police proposals are at a very early stage and the council must be consulted. We will be pressing Gwent Police for details, an explanation and information.

Leader of Newport City Council, Councillor Bob Bright
