Official opening of intermediate care unit

Posted on Monday 24th August 2015

Newport's Mayor Councillor Herbie Thomas yesterday officially opened a unit which helps older people who are leaving hospital regain their confidence and independence before going home.

A Welsh Government grant was used to fund the conversion of a number of rooms at Parklands Residential Home in Malpas for intermediate care, also known as "step down".

Councillor Paul Cockeram, Newport City Council's Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, attended the official opening along with the Malpas ward members.

He said: "I am proud that the council is able to provide such a first class facility that will be so important to the well-being of some of our residents.

"Older people can lose their confidence after a stay in hospital but very much want to return to their own homes. Intermediate care can help provide the support they need by helping them to relearn the skills they need to live independently.

"It can also prevent longer than necessary stays in hospital for those who have recovered their health but still need assistance before they return home."

A celebration was held for all the residents of Parklands in recognition of the official opening of the unit with a steel band, tea and cakes.

Councillor Cockeram said: "I would like to thank the Parklands residents who had to temporarily move to another premises while the work was being carried out for their patience and co-operation.

"I am also extremely grateful to the staff who made sure the transition to the temporary new home, and back again, went so smoothly."
