Posted on Friday 21st August 2015

Newport City Council can reveal that the number of pupils in Newport achieving WJEC GCSE A*- A grades was 18.7 per cent.

Figures for the WJEC examinations show that 60.4 per cent of entries in Newport achieved grades A* to C. Overall, 97.9 per cent of WJEC entries in the city were graded between A* and G.

The proportion of Newport pupils achieving a pass at WJEC GCSE is slightly higher than the Wales average for all exam boards.

Newport City Council Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said: "Congratulations to all Newport pupils on their exam achievements today and I wish them well on the next stage of their journey whether that is continuing in education or entering the world of work.

"I also wish to extend my thanks to those who have helped Newport's young people achieve their potential - to our teachers and parents for the support they have provided.

"I enjoyed joining the staff and pupils of Lliswerry High School this morning as they collected their results. It's always such a wonderful atmosphere in a school hall on days like today where young people are experiencing their first significant academic and vocational achievement."
