Newport pupils rewarded for perfect attendance records

Posted on Friday 25th September 2015

Four pupils who did not miss a day of school in 2014/15 were presented with prizes by Newport's Mayor Councillor Herbie Thomas.

A total of 673 pupils across the city's primary and secondary schools had a 100 per cent attendance record and they will each receive a certificate for their achievement.

All the names were put into a draw and a winner was chosen from each of the four key stages: Janella Belen, a year two pupil at St Patrick's RC Primary; Lacey Clifford, a year three pupil at Lliswerry Primary; Morgan Walker, who is in year nine at Bassaleg School and Majid Al-Jeroudi, from year 11 at Lliswerry High.

They visited the Civic Centre today where they were presented with their rewards - a new iPad kindly donated by Admiral, the insurance specialist, which has offices in the city.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, the council's Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, was also on hand to congratulate the pupils. She initiated the awards to raise the profile and important of full attendance across the city and it is one of her priorities as cabinet member.

"Regular attendance is recognised as very important for every pupil as as it gives them the best opportunity to maximise their attainment and achievement..  That is why the council is celebrating and highlighting these pupils who have achieved full attendance.

"The 673 pupils can all be proud that they have not missed a day of school for a whole year and we hope that will continue and that others will be able to follow their fine example. I know that many schools do excellent work in this area.

"I would also like to thank Admiral for its generosity in donating the iPads to the four lucky winners who, I'm sure, will enjoy using these excellent prizes."
