Newport bids to become a Dementia Friendly City

Posted on Friday 29th May 2015

Businesses and residents are being invited to help make a difference to the lives of people with dementia and help Newport become a Dementia Friendly City.

Newport City Council is working with the Alzheimer's Society and other partners towards achieving national accreditation as a dementia friendly city.

An event in the Gallery, Newport Market, High Street, from 1.30pm-3pm on Thursday 4 June will celebrate this pledge and mark the start of a series of Dementia Friends awareness sessions across the city.

As part of the process of achieving accreditation, business and individuals are asked to become dementia champions and friends.

Through training, they will learn a little bit more about what it is like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action - from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media.

The programme for Thursday's event, which will be launched by Newport's Mayor Councillor Herbie Thomas, includes a presentation of a memory daisy by children from St Mary's RC Primary School, a carer's story and a performance by the Alzheimer's Society Music and Memories Choir.
