Newport Transporter Bridge is a big hit with visitors having won a 2016 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award

Newport City Council is delighted to announce that the city’s iconic Transporter Bridge has received a TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence for the second year running.

Now in its sixth year, the achievement celebrates tourism businesses that have earned great traveller reviews on TripAdvisor over the past year.

Certificate of Excellence recipients include accommodations, eateries and attractions located all over the world that have continually delivered a quality customer experience.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport Councillor Debbie Harvey said the accolade was well deserved.

“Newport Transporter Bridge Bridge is one of only five operational transporter bridges in the world and one of only two in the UK.

“It is consistently highly rated on TripAdvisor so to receive acknowledgement of this with the Certificate of Excellence, for the second year running, is great news for the city and for the many volunteers who run this tourist attraction along with the visitor centre,” said Cllr Harvey.

Heather Leisman, Vice President of Industry Marketing, TripAdvisor, said the Certificate of Excellence accounts for the quality, quantity and immediacy of reviews submitted by travellers on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period.

To qualify, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.

Newport Transporter Bridge, one of the city’s most iconic and striking landmarks, was opened in 1906. Repair works have been carried out since the 1960s including a major refit in the 1990s and in 2010.

It is open Wednesday to Sunday only from now until 30 September from 10am to 5pm. It is also open on Bank Holiday Mondays during May and August.

Last admission is 4pm and the last ferry crossing from west to east is at 4.30pm.
