New location to be found for Newport's Welsh medium school

Posted on Wednesday 3rd February 2016

A meeting of Newport City Council’s planning committee has rejected an application to build the city’s first permanent Welsh medium secondary school, proposed for land at the current Duffryn High School site.

It is important to note however, that the council is still legally required to provide secondary education in Welsh in Newport. It must be emphasised that this is only a planning decision not to allow a building to be built at a specific location.

The planning committee’s decision does not prevent Newport from having a permanent Welsh medium secondary school, and work will start immediately in order to select another location.

Newport City Council is still intending to provide Welsh medium secondary education for pupils from September 2016, at the temporary location of Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Teyrnon in Brynglas.

The Council is now scheduling urgent talks with Welsh Government to secure funding of a new school at another location in the city, as soon as one can be identified.

A meeting has been scheduled for 4.30pm on Friday afternoon at the Civic Centre (February 5) to explain what happens next for children who are planning to receive Welsh medium secondary education in the city.

Duffryn High School will still benefit from significant improvements to its facilities.  A meeting will be held for parents at Duffryn High School tomorrow (February 4) at 4.30pm, to update them on next steps for the school in light of today’s decision.
