New Mayor elected for Newport

Posted on Wednesday 20th May 2015

Councillor Herbie Thomas was sworn in as Newport’s new Mayor in a ceremony at Newport City Council’s Civic Centre yesterday evening (Tuesday).

He becomes Newport’s 383rd Mayor, a position held by some distinguished and famous former Mayors – most notably perhaps, John Frost in 1836 who was involved in the Chartist uprising in 1839.

Born in Newport, Councillor Thomas has served the city faithfully for most of his adult life.

It comes as no surprise perhaps that Newport’s First Citizen, so proud to have been born the same year that Aneurin Bevan founded the NHS, would end up working at St Woolos Hospital for 43 years.

A councillor since 1994 at Allt-yr-yn and Gaer wards respectively, the Mayor will be supported by his partner Mayoress Jacqueline Mitchell.

Mayor of Newport, Councillor Herbie Thomas has nominated Diabetes UK, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Madzimai Pamwe - Zimbabwe Wales Women’s Partnership as his chosen charities during his tenure in office.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s largest domestic research charity dedicated to funding pioneering research into the diseases that cause dementia in order to prevent, treat and cure them.

Diabetes UK is the UK’s leading diabetes charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of every person affected by or at risk of diabetes.

Madzimai Pamwe – Zimbabwe Wales Women’s Partnership (meaning working together) is a Newport based community group comprising of four women.  They work in partnership with people across Wales to raise awareness and promote community cohesion as well as supporting vulnerable women in rural and urban locations in Zimbabwe.  Their work focuses on the need to achieve universal primary education and improving maternal health.
