Good review for Monnow Primary School

Monnow Primary School in Newport has been rated ‘good’ for its current performance and for its prospects for improvement in a report by schools’ inspector Estyn.

The good rating for current performance was based on:

  • Many pupils make good progress as they move through the school
  • Many pupils use their thinking and problem solving to a high standard
  • Most pupils enjoy their work and work very well in class
  • Learning experiences support the development of pupils’ independent learning skills highly effectively
  • Teaching is good.
  • The school understands the needs of its pupils very well
  • The learning environment, both inside and outside, is of high quality

Prospects for improvement are also good because:

  • The headteacher provides effective leadership
  • All staff work well together and share the schools values and aims
  • Governors are well informed about all aspects of the schools work
  • The school has sound self-evaluation processes
  • The school makes good use of a wide range of first hand evidence for self evaluation
  • The school works effectively with a wide range of partners, particularly parents and the local cluster of schools.    

Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and young people, Councillor Debbie Wilcox, said “I’d like to congratulate Monnow Primary School for their hard work in achieving such a positive report from Estyn. 

"The Inspectorate’s findings are testament to the efforts of everyone involved in the school - teachers, staff, governors and last but not least the pupils.    

"Among the many positives highlighted in the report, what’s particularly pleasing and encouraging is the progress the pupils make from the point of entry to the school.  This can be attributed according to the inspection to the ‘excellent care support and guidance for the pupils along with an excellent the teaching environment.’    Well done to everyone at MonnowPrimary School.”
