Council issues scam warning

Posted on Thursday 1st December 2016

Newport City Council is warning residents to be aware of potentially misleading communications by phone and email relating to council tax.

Some residents have recently received phone calls and emails which may be presented to be from the council. They are not.

The callers have various stories including council tax collection and asking about involvement in an accident.

In one case, an email which contained the council logo, claimed to be from the Claims Revue Bureau. They are asking residents to pay out £69.99 for the bureau’s administration charges to pursue a claim for a rebate on the resident’s community charges for the past few years. There are no such rebates.

These communications are not from the council and we would never ask for bank details over the phone for council tax refunds.

Residents are advised to ignore any such communications.

If you are in any doubt about communications you receive from the council please call 01633 656656.
