Commonwealth flag raising service at Civic Centre

Posted on Thursday 5th March 2020

Newport City Council is marking Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising service on Monday 9 March.

The ceremony, led by Reverend Keith Beardmore, will take place at 10am outside the Civic Centre.

During the service the Mayor, Councillor William J. Routley, will read a personal message from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, QC.

Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, will read the Commonwealth Affirmation before the raising of the Commonwealth flag. This will be repeated in nations around the globe as member states reaffirm their commitment to democracy, development and respect for diversity.

This year's theme is Delivering a Common Future: Connecting. Innovating. Transforming.

Together, the people of the Commonwealth will seek to tackle climate change and find sustainable solutions; to work to build peace and harmony through social and democratic development; and to encourage inclusive economic empowerment and fair trade, so that all can share the fruits of progress and prosperity
