Time running out for businesses to apply for Covid-19 grants

Posted on Wednesday 24th June 2020

Newport City Council is encouraging all businesses within the city to apply for Covid-19 related grants before the deadline on Tuesday 30th June.

Businesses have just under a week to take advantage of grants that were first made available by Welsh Government in March.

To date more than £28m has been paid out to Newport businesses, however time is running out to apply for a grant and it is possible that your business could still benefit if you act now.

The grants are administered by the council on behalf of Welsh Government. There are two available for qualifying businesses:

•           £10,000 payable to all business premises in use with a rateable value of less than £12,000. Sometimes very small premises have no rates to pay but may still qualify for a business grant.

•           £25,000 grant for business that are open to the public and operate in the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors. The business must have a rateable value in the range £12,001 to £51,000.

If you think that your business might qualify details on how to apply can be found on the Newport City Council website www.newport.gov.uk/businessrates

If you’re not sure if your business will qualify, or you want to discuss the grant process please email the team on [email protected] making sure to put COVID GRANT APPLICATION as the subject.

If you have already applied and your application was unsuccessful or your business does not fall into any of the above criteria there may be other more suitable financial help available.
