Residents encouraged to Shop Safe Newport as non-essential retail begins to reopen

Newport City Council is working alongside businesses preparing to reopen as part of the nation’s recovery from lockdown.
Welsh Government confirmed earlier today that all non-essential retail outlets across the country will be able to reopen from Monday 22nd June, providing they have put in place measures to enable social distancing within their premises.
To help both businesses and shoppers, the council’s Shop Safe Newport campaign, brings together information about what shopping in Newport will look like.
There is information for shoppers about what extra measures will be in place to help them shop in safety. Measures that the council will be taking directly include:
- social distancing solutions for retail areas and transport hubs
- implementing one way pedestrian systems and/or footway widening
- anti-viral treatment of high frequency touch points (e.g. handrails, bins, push buttons, seating)
- enhanced cleansing of council car parks
Residents can let us know how they feel about returning to the city’s shopping areas through our online survey.
The campaign also builds on the work already done to support businesses, with further advice and guidance. Officers from the council will assess whether or not a business complies with these requirements by carrying out site visits, providing advice and responding to complaints from the public about possible breaches.
