Council marks Armed Forces Day

Posted on Monday 22nd June 2020

Newport City Council will be raising the flag outside the civic centre to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Day.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic there will be no official flag raising ceremony this year but it is important to recognise and to show support for the men and women who make up our armed forces community.  The flag will be raised for a week from Monday 22 June.

The council’s armed forces champion, Councillor Mark Spencer said, “Showing support for the armed forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families.

“As we are unable to hold our usual event we should not forget to support our armed forces and their families, the veterans and reservists who give up their spare time, as well as our cadet forces. Please take a moment on Armed Forces Day to think of them.”

Newport City Council works with partners from the public services, charities and other community organisations to support the armed forces community in a variety of ways.

The Leader of the council, Councillor Jane Mudd said, “Newport City Council, signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2016 which recognises the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and their families.  The council works with partners from the public services, charities and other organisations to provide support and information to serving or former members of the armed forces.

“On Armed Forces Day it is important to recognise and support the service men and women, their families, reservists and veterans in our city.”
