New Mayor takes up role

Councillor Tom Suller is the new Mayor of Newport and the city’s first citizen following the council’s annual general meeting on 28 July.

Due to the restrictions in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic there was no formal robing ceremony this year.  

Ward councillor for Marshfield, Councillor Suller has been serving the city since 2008.

He is the 388th recorded Mayor of the City of Newport. The first Mayor is recorded as taking up office in 1314.

Councillor Suller’s wife Patricia is the new Mayoress of Newport.  The couple met in 1991 when they were both working at Tremorfa steelworks and were married later that year.

The deputy Mayor of Newport is Councillor Val Dudley.  

Councillor Dudley represents the Rogerstone ward and has been a councillor since 2017. She is a long standing member of St John’s Church, Rogerstone and her hobbies include animal welfare, watching wildlife programmes and gardening.

The Mayor’s chosen charity for 2020/21 is Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.

Retiring Mayor, Councillor William J. Routley and Mayoress Mrs Allison Routley, were thanked for their year of service.  

Councillor Suller replaces Councillor David Williams who has deferred his Mayoral year.
