Pet owners advised to act responsibly when walking near livestock

Newport City Council is reminding pet owners to act responsibly and keep dogs on leads at all times when walking near livestock.
As more walkers take to local rural routes amid the Covid-19 outbreak, the council is also urging residents to clean up after their dogs when out including when on or near to agricultural land.
Livestock, particularly sheep, can be panicked by dogs going to chase them, which can cause them both stress and physical harm.
They can be especially vulnerable during lambing season, and we would ask residents to ensure they respect our local farms by ensuring dogs are on leads at all times.
Sheep worrying is an offence, and anyone with any information on sheep worrying should contact Gwent Police by calling 101.
Parasites found in some dog faeces can also cause harm to livestock, and as such the council would again remind residents to ensure any dog waste is picked up and disposed of responsibly when walking near local farms.
