Newport Food Festival Teenchef competition

Young chefs are preparing to do battle when they meet to test out their cooking skills at the annual Teenchef competition – part of Newport Food Festival on tomorrow (on Saturday, 5 October).
This year there are two participating teams in the final representing Newport East and Newport North from the Newport Youth Academy.
They have named themselves the A Team and the NYA.
There are four people in each team led by a team leader and each team has 45 minutes to cook a meal.
Those who have the tough task of choosing the winners are judges Hywel Jones, Food Festival Patron, a chef from the Celtic Manor which is sponsoring the contest, Councillor David Mayer and Councillor William J Routley, the Mayor of Newport.
The theme for this year’s competition is based on countries participating in the Rugby World Cup
Celtic Manor Resort culinary director Peter Fuchs said: "We are delighted to be sponsoring the Teenchef competition once again and helping to encourage the next generation of culinary talent in this city.
“The standard of food produced by these young cooks has been very impressive in recent years, especially considering the restraints of time and budget placed upon them.
“We look forward to joining the judging panel at Newport Food Festival and seeing what this year’s finalists produce.”
The final of the Teenchef competition takes place at 11am in the Gallery area of the Newport Market.
Newport Youth Academy helps NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) young adults to improve their skills through learning programmes and opportunities.
The youngsters involved in the NYA have the chance to take part in a government funded project which aims to give participants the skills needed to get a job, take on more learning or find an apprenticeship.
In the last year more than 80 per cent of students who have left the NYA went on to further education or found a job and the majority of those had left school with no qualifications.
