Newport City Council, in conjunction with the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge, has produced a calendar with past and present images of the iconic structure.

The calendar will be on sale at the Central Library in John Frost Square from the Art Gallery reception on the third floor from Thursday, 7 November.

It will also be on sale by the Friends at forthcoming events they are due to attend.

The calendar highlights events taking place at the Transporter Bridge during 2020.

Money raised through the sale of the calendar, which will be priced at £5, is part of the council’s plans to prove to the Heritage Lottery Fund, which allocated £1 million to the Transporter Bridge project back in 2018, that the Bridge is profoundly connected to the local population.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, leader of the council, said she hopes the calendar will prove popular with residents.

“The calendar traces the history of our beloved Transporter Bridge through images old and new and is a lovely momento of the bridge and what it means to our city.

“Of course if anyone has relatives who have moved away it is a nice reminder of home so we hope the calendar is a success as it will also help us prove to the Heritage Lottery Fund that we are serious about promoting this great asset,” said Cllr Wilcox.

The Friends and the council are working hard to support the second part of the Heritage Lottery Fund application which aims to capture £10 million to secure the bridge’s future, build a new visitor centre and pay for the costly maintenance of the bridge which is now 113 years old.

As well as purchasing the calendar people can also make a donation to help to secure the future of the Transporter Bridge, by visiting www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/newporttransporterbridge1
