Councillor William J Routley is the new Mayor of Newport and the city’s first citizen.

He was enrolled at a ceremony at the Civic Centre on 14 May following the annual general meeting of the council.

Councillor Routley is the ward councillor for Langstone and has also previously represented the wards of Alway and Stow Hill.

He is the 387th recorded Mayor of the City of Newport. The first Mayor is recorded as taking up office in 1314.

His partner, Ms Alison Robbins is the new Mayoress of Newport. The couple met while working in the NHS and have been together since 2011. They now live in Langstone.

The deputy Mayor of Newport is Councillor Charles Ferris and his sister-in-law Caroline is Deptuy Mayoress.

Councillor Ferris currently represents the Allt-yr-yn ward and has been a Councillor since 2008. He is a strong supporter of Newport’s medieval ship, which was discovered in the banks of the River Usk in 2002 and is patron of the Friends of the Newport Ship.

The Mayor’s chosen charity for 2019/20 is the David "Bomber" Pearce Legacy.

Set up in honour of Newport's only British Heavyweight Champion and coveted Lonsdale Belt owner, the charity offers assistance to sporting individuals and community clubs that seek to inspire young people through community projects. It also supports local benevolent charities within Newport and the south Wales area.

Retiring Mayor Councillor Malcolm Linton and Mayoress Mrs Sharon Linton were thanked for their busy year of service. During his term of office Councillor Linton raised more than £15,000 for his chosen charities.
