Civil Parking Enforcement update

Posted on Wednesday 22nd May 2019

Residents may have noticed that many parking restriction lines around the city have been refreshed or renewed ahead of Newport City Council taking over Civil Parking Enforcement on 1 July.

Contractors have completed work in several wards since the programme started in January and when roads were closed ahead of last month’s marathon lines were updated where possible.

In the coming weeks contractors will be concentrating on Maindee, areas of Beechwood, Chepstow Road and the city centre plus bus stops and outside schools.

Parking signs are also being replaced and updated alongside this work.

A team of 14 civil enforcement officers have been recruited and they will be patrolling the streets to ensure drivers are not breaking the rules of the Highway Code.

If a vehicle is found to be parked unlawfully the officers will have the power to issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The council is taking over CPE from Gwent Police who will withdraw from parking enforcement on 30 June 2019 with the council taking over from the next day.

However the responsibility of enforcing other traffic related legislation, particularly for more serious offences or where it is necessary in the interests of public safety, remains with Gwent Police.

Newport City Council’s CPE campaign to remind motorists of the rules of the Highway Code in relation to safe parking uses a #ParkRight message on the council’s social media channels.
