A scheme to make it easier to access Newport City Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre in Docks Way is nearing completion.

The direction of traffic around the site is being reversed.

The changes will mean visitors who want to take items to the Reuse Shop on the site can turn left at the entrance instead of having to drive through the site and past the recycling skips.

The road inside the site has also been extended to allow more room for waiting vehicles to queue. This should in turn reduce the number of vehicles having to queue on the approach roads to the Recycling Centre.

Wastesavers, Newport City Council’s charitable trust partner, has a main Reuse Centre on Telford Street, just off Corporation Road, Newport along with two other outlets, the one inside the HWRC site in Docks Way, Newport and at The Shed in Llantrisant.

These centres rely on the good will of people donating their unwanted, quality household goods which can be upcycled and sold on.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, cabinet member for Streetscene, said the changes at the HWRC site are being introduced to help traffic congestion at busy times, especially at weekends.

“The changes mean that residents who want to donate items to the recycling shop won’t have to queue as if they were putting items in the skips, instead they can drive straight to the shop.

“We are extending the road inside the site too so this will hopefully cut down on the number of vehicles queuing on the approach road.

“We believe these changes will create a better environment and help both staff and customers wanting to use the site,” said Cllr Jeavons.
