Commonwealth flag raising service at Civic Centre

Posted on Friday 8th March 2019

Newport City Council is marking Commonwealth Day with a flag raising service on Monday, 11 March.

The ceremony will take place at Newport Civic Centre at 10am when the Mayor's Chaplain Reverend Diane Notley will officiate.

During the service the Mayor of Newport, Councillor Malcolm Linton, will read a personal message from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland.

A specially-written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read out by the Vice Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Tuggey, before the raising of the h flag, an act which will be repeated around the globe.

People of all ages and backgrounds in Commonwealth countries will recommit to working "towards a common future", the theme for this year and for the Commonwealth heads of government meeting being hosted by the UK in April.
