Public invited to Newport service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Posted on Tuesday 22nd January 2019

Newport City Council is hosting the annual Holocaust Memorial Day service in Newport Cathedral at 11am on Monday 28 January.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda and the 40th anniversary of the end of the genocide in Cambodia.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the special occasion which this year has the theme "torn from home".

The service will reflect on how the enforced loss of a safe place is part of the trauma faced by those experiencing persecution and genocide.

Among those attending this year will be the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, the High Sheriff, the Mayor of Newport and the Leader of Newport City Council.

Newport school pupils will take a leading part with Llanwern High's choir performing a number of songs and students from Bassaleg and Caerleon doing readings and prayers. Children from Ringland Primary School will be involved in the candle procession while Gwent Music Brass Ensemble play.

The national commemoration event has taken place in the UK since 2001 with more than 2,400 local activities taking place on or around 27 January each year

This is a day to pay respects and remember the millions of people who have died during, or whose lives were changed by, the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
