Llanwern High School celebrates Estyn report

The headteacher, chair and board of governors, staff and school community of Llanwern High are today celebrating the good news they have been removed from an Estyn follow up category.

Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and skills Councillor Gail Giles praised headteacher Tracey Jarvis, chair of governors Councillor Debbie Harvey, and staff for their commitment and determination.

A report published by Estyn, following a visit to the school in November 2019, said the school is judged to have made sufficient progress in relation to the recommendations following the most recent core inspection that Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales.

As a result the school has been removed from the list requiring significant improvement.

“This is excellent news for Llanwern High School, the headteacher, the chair and board of governors, staff and all the pupils,” said Councillor Giles.

“I congratulate all concerned on this excellent achievement which has rightly been recognised by Estyn.

“The school is now in a strong position to build on its strengths which resulted in the school being moved out of all categories.”

The Estyn report notes significant progress on raising standards and improving pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills, improved behaviour and attendance and it now has a suitable range of approaches to improve the effectiveness of teaching and assessment.

The report also highlights that in the last year the new headteacher has established a clear vision for improvement that is well understood by all staff resulting in an established and well co-ordinated approach to leadership introducing a strong evaluation and improvement process with a focus on teaching, learning and wellbeing.
