Council welcomes exciting National Technology Institute proposal

Posted on Tuesday 9th April 2019

Newport Economic Network has announced an ambitious proposal to establish a National Technology Institute (NTI) in Newport.

The NTI would be a world-leading institute delivering applied higher education technology programmes that emphasise innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialisation. It would deliver applied programmes that produce the skills necessary for Wales to benefit from opportunities in the knowledge and technology sectors.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, Leader of Newport City Council, welcomed the concept and early vision: “The proposition to create a National Technology Institute in Newport is an exciting opportunity. We have a growing technology sector developing in the city and the NTI would help to create opportunities for our communities. I have always believed the route to better life outcomes is rooted in developing the skills necessary to secure employment and the NTI will be a new institution focused on this goal. It will also help to attract new businesses into the city which will be good for our local economy.”
