New Mayor is appointed

The new Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Malcolm Linton and his wife Sharon

Councillor Malcolm Linton is Newport City Council’s latest first citizen.

He was enrolled as the city’s Mayor at a ceremony at the Civic Centre on 15 May following the annual general meeting of the council.

Cllr Linton is the ward councillor for Ringland where he was first elected in 2004 and serves on the planning committee and the scrutiny committee.

He is the 386th recorded Mayor of the City of Newport

His wife Mrs Sharon Linton is the new Mayoress of Newport and the couple have three children, son Wayne and daughters Donna and Kirsty.

Cllr Linton is a Trustee at Ringland Labour Club where he also helps with committee duties on weekends.

Retiring Mayor Councillor David Fouweather and Mayoress Mrs Paula Fouweather were thanked for their busy year of service.

During his term of office Cllr Fouweather raised more than £20,000 for his chosen charities.

The deputy Mayor of Newport is Councillor Phil Hourahine and his wife Merille is Deptuy Mayoress.

Councillor Hourahine represents St Julian’s Ward and is a governor at St Julian’s School and Glan Usk Primary School

The couple will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this year and are looking forward to assisting the Mayor and Mayoress during their year of office.
