Honouring past and present service people

Posted on Tuesday 19th June 2018

Armed Forces Day and the centenary of the RAF will be commemorated with the raising of the flag on Monday 25 June at the Civic Centre in Newport.

A service, beginning at 10am, will be led by the Mayor's chaplain, Reverend Diane Karolyn Notley and include a reading by Deputy Mayor Councillor Phil Hourahine.

Air Commodore Adrian Williams, of the RAF, will introduce his service's section of the event which will also include performances from John Frost High School and Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd choirs.

Both flags will be raised by a team from the RAF and the event will be attended by both serving personnel and veterans as well as cadets.

Others attending include the Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, Brigadier Robert Aitken, the High Sheriff of Gwent, Sharon Linnard, and the leader of Newport City Council, Councillor Debbie Wilcox as well as councillors and school representatives.

Members of the public are also welcome and are asked to arrive outside the main entrance of the Civic Centre by 9.50am.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for serving troops and their families, veterans and cadets. The RAF has been "keeping our skies" safe since 1918 and events to mark its centenary have been taking place across the country this year.
