Flytippers are dumping their rubbish in the large bins at Newport City Council cemeteries.

In the past month council staff have discovered commercial waste – and in one case an old sink and toilet – in the large bins reserved for discarded flowers.

To try to resolve this issue the council will be taking measures including moving bins, reducing their numbers and changing bin sizes. We will also be looking to introduce more recycling initiatives across the sites.

The flytipping  problem came to light after the council received complaints of overflowing cemetery bins and on investigation discovered the dumped debris.

Waste enforcement officers will be examining the flytipped materials to see if there is evidence which could lead to prosecutions.

Councillor Roger Jeavons, Newport City Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene said: “It is hard to believe that members of the public are purposely visiting our cemeteries in order to dump their rubbish in the large bins on site.

“We are aware that with Father’s Day approaching many people will be making special trips to mark the passing of their loved ones and we are doing our best to keep the cemeteries as clean and tidy as we can.

“Staff are on schedule to ensure the grass is cut and the bins emptied.

“We hope if anyone has information about who may be flytipping at the cemeteries they will report them to the council so we can investigate.”
