Chris Packham meets his fans during his UK Bioblitz Tour when he called in at St Woolos Cemetery in Newport

Newport City Council would like to say a really big thank you to the expert wildlife recorders and all the members of the public who came to our Bioblitz at St Woolos Cemetery, part of Chris Packham’s UK Bioblitz tour.

More than 150 people got involved on the day (21 July)  and recorded more than 360 different species of plant, fungi, lichen, insect, mammal and bird (we’re still counting though so this will go up!)!

That is an incredible number of species for our largest and oldest municipal cemetery, and the council is very proud of all the work that was put in on Saturday.

The council now has a comprehensive list of what we have on site, and this can only help inform us in its future management.

Special thanks must of course go to Chris Packham and surprise visitor, Iolo Williams, who came along and inspired so many of the visitors with their passion for the wildlife we found. We clearly showed that Nature Reserves are Not Enough!

Thanks also to SEWBReC, the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre who helped us with collating the data.
