Newport to mark Merchant Navy Day 3 September

Posted on Thursday 30th August 2018

On Monday 3 September, the Red Ensign will be flown at the Civic Centre in Newport in recognition of the essential work of the Merchant Navy sailors since the First World War.

A ceremony to bless and raise the Merchant Navy's official flag will begin at 10am outside the main reception area. The service will be conducted by Reverend Mark Lawson-Jones, from the Mission to Seafarers

It will include a reading by Newport's Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Linton, and a message from HRH the Earl of Wessex delivered by the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, Brigadier Robert Aitken. The flag will be raised by Alan Speight, of the Newport Merchant Navy Association.

Representatives from the armed services will be in attendance as well as the Leader of Newport City Council, councillors and employees.

Newport is supporting a nationwide call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flag staffs.
