Landfill site clarification

Posted on Thursday 2nd August 2018

A commercial landfill site that takes waste from private companies and other councils has been owned and operated by Newport City Council for decades.

It is not a dumping ground for other local authorities and to suggest the council is using the site to ‘sell’ landfill space to other councils is misleading and also wrong.

Last year the city’s landfill site in Docks Way generated an income of £1.6 million which helps to reduce the growing pressure on the council budget and ultimately council taxpayers.

The majority of Newport’s non-recyclable waste is sent to incineration as part of a shared facility in Cardiff. If this site is not operating because of maintenance, our landfill site is used as a contingency.

While the amount sent for disposal has reduced, there is still a need for landfill to take some waste. For instance, the site has a specialist disposal process for asbestos.
