City Footbridge is being cleaned

The City Footbridge was closed at short notice today  (Monday 9 April) so a much-needed cleaning programme could go ahead.

The council had previously consulted with a range of organisations, including Maindee Primary School, Newport County FC, Newport Parkrun and Run4 Wales who wanted the bridge open on certain days because of the Easter school holidays and events taking place.

Because of the deadline this gave Newport City Council a short period in which to appoint a contractor and apply for a Marine License from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) which was not granted until the evening of Friday, 6 April.

Following feedback from those consulted and a risk assessment being undertaken on the most appropriate timing for the works, it was, on Friday, decided to fast track the work.  Unfortunately, there was insufficient time to provide the usual advanced closure notices to those affected.

The original notice of intention to close the bridge gave an expected period of four weeks including evenings and weekends, but it is the Council’s intention to reduce the length of the closure period by one to two weeks.

A Council spokesperson said: “We know many people wanted us to clean the City Footbridge, however due to the timing in which the license was issued we had insufficient time to get our usual forms of information into the public domain.  However, officers from the Council visited local businesses today and notices have been erected.

“This is the first closure for maintenance in 12 years and once finished the bridge will look as impressive as ever.

“We hope people understand why we had to start work quickly and thank everyone for their patience while the bridge is closed for the works to go ahead.”

The alternative pedestrian route is across Town Bridge which is nearby.
