Historic Market Arcade
People are being invited to view a study of the character of the High Street area of the city centre prepared as part of the council’s Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Townscape project.
Funding of £177,300 was awarded by the HLF earlier this year towards the development of a scheme that could secure more than £1 million for the comprehensive regeneration of Market Arcade.
A number of strands of work are being carried out as part of the preparation for the final bid including the urban characterisation study which looks at how the history of a place has shaped today’s street scene and architecture.
It tells the fascinating story of how Newport and the High Street area, which sits within the city centre’s conservation area, developed over the centuries from medieval times to the present day.
An exhibition in relation to the study is being held in Mad Hatter’s Café on 19 September, 1pm-6pm.
A copy of the study can be found at www.newport.gov.uk
