More than 950 new homes were completed in Newport in 2016/17 up on last year’s record-breaking figure.

In 2015/16, 908 homes were built which was the highest number in any local authority area in Wales.

Newport is also expected to be near or at the top of the league again when last year’s all-Wales numbers are collated.

A number of major developments that are taking shape in the city have contributed to the totals including Glan Llyn in Llanwern and Jubilee Park in Rogerstone as well as Mon Bank and Loftus Garden Village.

Jubilee Park was the highest performing house site in Newport in 2016/17 with 223 units completed.

Many of these significant new builds are also creating facilities for the residents. New schools are being created, for example, in Jubilee Park, where a new primary is due to open in September, and Glan Llyn where work on another new primary is underway.

Councillor Jane Mudd, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and housing, said: “New homes are being built in Newport to meet a growing demand and it is important that new facilities are being created as part of the larger sites thanks to contributions from developers.

“I’m also keen to see that developments include an element of affordable accommodation to give even more people the opportunity to move into a home of their own.

"We welcome innovative approaches to schemes, such as the Pobl Group's Loftus Garden Village, which offers a shared ownership scheme for those who cannot afford a traditional mortgage"
