Poppy Appeal launched in Newport

This year’s official launch of the Royal British Legion 2017 Poppy Appeal will take place in Newport on Thursday, 26 October.

The Mayor of Newport, Councillor David Fouweather, together with local war veteran and Poppy Appeal stalwart Ron Jones, BEM, who is 100-years-old, will be attending along with the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, Brigadier Robert Aitken, CBE.

Newport RBL has organised the event in the open area of John Frost Square.

If the weather is bad the event will be moved to inside the Friars Walk Shopping area.

The band of the Prince of Wales Division will be playing in the area from 10.30am.

At 11am the Mayor will officially welcome Brigadier Aitken and members of the Royal British Legion.

The Legion’s Gwent County President Lt Col Mike Harry will say the Exhortation followed by the Last Post being played.

The Lord Lieutenant will then address those present and declare the 2017 Poppy Appeal for Gwent officially open.
