Fairoak Nursery School wins NQA award

Staff and pupils at Newport’s Fairoak Nursery School are celebrating after winning a National Quality Award (NQA) for Healthy Schools.

The award is only given to schools who can prove they are implementing well-being initiatives at the very highest level.

Validators visited the school earlier this year and in their report noted that it was obvious from the outset and throughout the visit that health and wellbeing lies at the heart of the school and is reflected in everything that goes on, for pupils, staff and parents.

It goes on to say: “The school’s mission statement ‘Actively Engaging Lively Minds’ was seen in practice at all times.”

Head teacher Mrs Andi O’Brien said the school has been part of the programme since 2003.

She said: “This has confirmed our drive to place health and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do at Fairoak Nursery School. It has been fantastic to see everyone joining in with all aspects of the programme including pupils, parents, staff, governors and members of our local community.

“We are proud of our environment and the opportunities we provide to enable our children to become healthy, independent learners totally engaged with the world around them.

“All our children have fun, love learning and develop to become the very best they can possible be.”

Mrs O’Brien also made special mention of Mrs Jayne Morgan who has co-ordinated the programme since 2014 and guided the school through Phase 5 and the National Quality Award.

Councillor Gail Giles, Newport City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated the nursery on its success, stating:

“Well done to everyone connected with Fairoak nursery who helped in this outstanding achievement. The award acknowledges all the hard work which goes into ensuring pupils are taught in a healthy environment with their wellbeing at the heart of everything they do.”
