Following the local elections on May 4, in which Welsh Labour secured 31 of Newport’s 50 seats, Newport City Council has formally appointed Councillor Debbie Wilcox as Leader of the Council.

At the annual general meeting, a new Cabinet was also announced.

The Cabinet portfolios, which have been refreshed to reflect the changing demands on the extensive and varied services delivered by the council, will be held by a mix of returning Cabinet Members and new appointees.

Councillor Wilcox said of her appointment and the new Cabinet: “I care about Newport’s past and I am proud of our history – but my sights are firmly set on Newport’s future.

“I am determined that the council will play its part in making Newport a great place to work and grow business, to learn, live and bring up a family.

“Over the past year we have worked hard to raise Newport’s profile and I am excited to continue to lead that mission over the coming years.

“Our Cabinet positions and the Councillors chosen to drive forward each portfolio have been selected specifically with this in mind – we are here to serve the people of Newport and do everything in our power to improve the city.”
