New mayor takes up role

Posted on Wednesday 17th May 2017

A tradition dating back to medieval times in Newport was continued on 16 May 2017 when Councillor David Fouweather became the 385th Mayor.

His wife Paula became the new Mayoress at a ceremony in the Civic Centre. They followed in the footsteps of last year's Mayor Councillor David Atwell and Mayoress Carole Atwell.

Councillor Fouweather was born in the Newport home of his great grandfather, local hero Tom Toya Lewis. When he was just 17, Tom risked his life to help others in the Newport Docks disaster of 1909.

Councillor Fouweather attended Newport schools and worked for local companies after leaving school. He was also a special constable for 10 years where he met his future wife.

He has worked for 23 years at the Prison Service where he now helps to support prisoners with mental health issues and addiction issues.

He is serving his fourth term as ward member for Allt-yr-yn since being first elected in 2004.

The father-of-two is an active school governor, supports local groups such as the Ridgeway Community Centre and enjoys walking his two dogs

During his year of office, his charities will be St David's Hospice Care, MPCT (the Motivational Preparation College for Training) and Amazing Grace Spaces.

Newport-based St David's offers support and care to people with life-limiting illness and their families; MPCT helps young people achieve their full potential while Amazing Grace Spaces is a charity helping local people in crisis.

Mrs Fouweather works for Target Group in Newport and is also group scout leader for 26th Newport Scout Group as well as an assistant cub scout leader.

Councillor Richard White and his wife Pamela were inaugurated as the new Deputy Mayor and Mayoress. Councillor White has represented the Marshfield ward for more than a decade and is a governor at Marshfield Primary and Bassaleg Schools.
