PopUp Business School proves inspirational to Newport's entrepreneurs

Posted on Thursday 23rd March 2017

Inspirational, amazing and brilliant - these were just some of the words used by those who attended the recent PopUp Business School in Newport.

More than 100 people attended free workshops and talks held in the gallery area of Newport Market.

Last year, Newport City Council established a development fund to support business growth, and one of the initiatives was to host a PopUp Business School.

Held over a fortnight, it attracted more than 100 people from those with just a germ of an idea to established businesses.

Councillor Debbie Wilcox, Leader of Newport City Council, said: "We were delighted to welcome the PopUp Business School to Newport and it has proved an outstanding success.

"It has been fantastic to hear that so many people want to start a new business or develop an existing one, and I'm thrilled that this event has been able to give them the confidence or knowledge that they need to do just that.

"I very much hope this is something that we will be able to repeat in the future, and that even more people will take the opportunity to get an invaluable insight into turning an idea into a reality, or helping their business grow."

Councillor Wilcox thanked the PopUp Business School and the other event partners - Newport City Homes, Business Wales, Communities First, Newport Now, Charter Housing, Monmouthshire Housing Association and Jobcentre Plus.

Alan Donegan, of the PopUp Business School, said: "It was brilliant. We have been helping people to see you don't need money to start a business. By day three, they are building their free websites and by day five they are making their first sale - it's a life changing moment."
