Latest figures show residents recycling more in Newport

Posted on Friday 3rd March 2017

Newport City Council welcomes the latest recycling figures which shows our residents are helping us reach targets set by the Welsh Government.

New figures released last week show the council’s overall performance on recycling, up to September last year, has increased by around five per cent to 64%.

The figure rose slightly to 67.14% in terms of green waste collected over quarter three.

Newport is now 11th out of the 22 local authorities who increased their reuse/recycling/composting rate compared with July to September 2015.

Councillor Ray Truman, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainability and Transport, said he was pleased to see the improvement highlighted in the latest report.

And he thanked everyone for their efforts in helping the city work towards achieving the Welsh Government’s current waste strategy ‘Towards Zero Waste’.

“We appreciate everyone’s help, especially our residents who are vigorously recycling every week to keep the amount of items that go to landfill down as much as possible.

“We look forward to the day when 100% of household waste is recycled, reused or repurposed, but it is heartening to see we are making good progress. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far,” said Cllr Truman.

The city has seen a change in how it recycles items in the last year with cardboard now collected weekly by our recycling partners Wastesavers, who introduced the red bag scheme for plastics, tins and cans throughout last year.

Wastesavers weekly collections also use a green box for cardboard, Tetra Pak and glass bottles, a blue box for paper, light card, clothes and electrical items with extra cardboard going into the green bag.

Newport City Council’s green waste collection service will restart from the week beginning Monday, March 6, for garden waste collected in the orange lidded bins.
