104th Regiment Royal Artillery to parade through Newport

Posted on Wednesday 29th March 2017

Proud soldiers from the 104th Regiment Royal Artillery will be marking their 50th anniversary by taking part in a Freedom Parade through the city centre on Saturday 1 April.

The Mayor of Newport Councillor David Atwell and Leader of Newport City Council Councillor Debbie Wilcox will be among the guests at the event.

The Regiment has strong links to the city as an Army Reserve unit is based in Raglan Barracks and the Freedom of Newport was granted to them in 1978.

Around 100 soldiers will exercise their right to parade through the city with colours flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed as they are led by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

The parade will start at Cambrian Road at 12.30pm continuing onto Bridge Street then High Street to the D-Day Memorial where a short ceremony will take place.

The Mayor will inspect the parade and Councillor Wilcox will read out the Freedom Scroll. The Parade Commander will then request permission to parade through the city.

The parade will then reform and travel down High Street, cross Stow Hill and follow Commercial Street to its junction with Charles Street and Llanarth Street.
