Visitors to Friars Walk in Newport can now pick up a black taxi cab at a new rank provided by Newport City Council.

The new rank is located on the access road off Kingsway between Newport Centre and Friars Walk and is a designated area for Hackney Carriages (black taxi cabs) only - not private license vehicles.

Drivers can still drop off passengers for the Newport Centre but it is illegal to park along that slip road.

Restrictions are in place however there is an access point outside the centre for deliveries.

Councillor Ray Truman, cabinet member for Licensing and Regulation, said it would help visitors to the city to have a designated taxi rank close to Usk Plaza which houses restaurants and bars.

“This taxi rank serves a very popular part of the city with many people enjoying the facilities at Usk Plaza, the Newport Centre and the nearby Dolman Theatre.

“And it gives visitors more choice of picking up taxis here and elsewhere across the city,” said Cllr Truman.
