Community gets behind arcade project

Posted on Tuesday 27th June 2017

Schools and volunteers are taking key roles in a scheme to restore the historic Market Arcade in Newport city centre.

Earlier this year, Newport City Council successfully bid received initial National Lottery support for a Townscape Heritage (TH) bid from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards developing a scheme to revitalise the arcade.

As part of the project, a memories event is being held in Newport Market from 29 June to 1 July.

People are being asked to take along any photographs, memorabilia or documents but also to share their recollections of the arcade which runs between High Street and Market Street.

The event will be held near the entrance in Upper Dock Street (by the Market Square bus station) from 9am to 4pm.

Local heritage group, the Bodkins, and Newport Ambassadors, established as part of the council's Welcome to Newport scheme, are supporting the project and will be on hand during the three days

St Woolos Primary, Millbrook Primary, Ysgol Cymraeg Bro Teyrnon and Duffryn Junior schools have also been involved.

Lyndsey Watkins, head teacher of Millbrook Primary School, said: ""The children and staff are loving learning about the history of a significant part of their local community. They have visited the site, researched its history and discussed the importance of regeneration.

"The children are excellent ambassadors for our city and are currently investigating ways to advocate for restoring the natural beauty of our city. They plan to take part in the memories event and encouraging others to take part and have their say too."

Development funding of £177,300 has been awarded towards progressing regeneration plans with the longer term aim of breathing new life into the shopping thoroughfare.

These plans will form the basis of a further application to the HLF later in the year for a full scheme.

Newport City Council would like to thank all those supporting the scheme including players of the National Lottery as their contribution is vital to helping the vision for the Market Arcade become a reality.
