There’s only one month to go until walkers lace up their boots, don their walking gear and set out for the second Newport Skyline Challenge.

On Saturday 9 September people are invited to get out and about and experience the wonderful countryside that Newport has to offer.

The Newport Skyline Challenge offers walking routes for all fitness levels and abilities.

The shorter walks are usually suitable for families with younger children and range in distance from 1.5 mile to 4.5 mile led walks or for those looking to go even further there are two more led walks of nine or 16 miles.

Bookings for the Skyline Challenge can be made via and will continue until 27 August.

All routes start and end at the Active Living Centre, Bettws and provide stunning surroundings that let you enjoy Newport’s varied countryside.

Councillor Deb Harvey, Newport City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said she hoped people of all ages would take the chance to join this event.

“The routes have been planned with all ages and abilities in mind, so there will be something for everyone. It is a chance for families and individuals to get out in the fresh air and see parts of Newport they may not know about,” said Cllr Harvey.

For all routes you should wear sensible walking shoes and appropriate clothing including wet-weather gear just in case.

On the longer routes you should be prepared for walking across fields, stiles, off-road tracks, through forestry and up some very big hills!

Water will be available at checkpoint on the routes but make sure you have your own supply as well as some fruit and healthy snacks.

It is important that walkers choose a route that is suitable for their own personal level of fitness. Shorter routes do not mean easy walking / running.

You must read the Walk the Port terms and conditions (pdf) before booking.

Newport's Walk the Port Skyline Challenge is sponsored by several groups and organisations including:
